Round Britain Windsurf: 1800 Miles on a 12Ft Board

From Publishers Weekly
What rational person would attempt to circumnavigate Britain on a sailboard? Batstone, just down from Oxford, conceived the journey as a publicity stunt to raise funds for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (he also wanted to qualify for the Guinness Book of Records). He found a private sponsor and organized a support systemcrew, a 46ft ketch and an inflatable motor boat. The party set out from Southend on May 2, 1984; they would return 10 weeks later, mission accomplished. Batstone tells an engaging story of his marathon voyage; he spent 54 days sailing, averaging 33 miles per day. There were problems with crew and equipment, with seasickness and exhaustion. But there was also exhilaration. Batstone found time to observe the coastline and he presents a marvelous picture of Britain as seen from water’s edge. Maps included here make this daredevil adventure convenient to follow. DecemberCopyright 1985 Reed Business Information, Inc.
